What are Forever Chemicals? PFAS, PFOA and PFOS?

Forever chemicals are man-made chemicals that take thousands of years to break down. Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), were created in the 1930s as the key ingredient to make waterproof coatings or nonstick surfaces. As of today, there are more than 3,000 chemicals that have this classification. Extensive studies have been run by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding two classes of PFAS which include PFOA and PFOS. These chemicals have been linked to many health effects in animals.

Where Are PFAS found?

There are thousands of PFAS chemicals which are found in products across the consumer industry as well as used in manufacturing. For this reason, humans are exposed to this chemical not only through the products they use, but also in the water they drink and air they breathe.

Who Is At Risk Of Being Exposed?

According to the EPA, most people in the United States have been exposed to PFAS, PFOA, or PFOS. This is due to the amount of manufacturers that have historically used this chemical in their production. Even though most PFOA and PFOS have been replaced in manufacturing, since the chemical doesn’t break down, it’s still present in the ground, air, and water.

How To Know If You Have Been Exposed?

There are blood tests that can show you whether or not PFAS is present in your blood. These tests are not able to tell you if the level of exposure will affect your health. However, you should speak with your doctor about any symptoms and concerns you have. Share this fact sheet put out by the ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry) with them to get the conversation started.

Potential Health Effects Of PFAS

According to the ATSDR/CDC, exposure to PFAS may lead to these health effects:

  • Increased cholesterol
  • Changes in enzymes in the liver
  • Risks of pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure for pregnant women
  • Greater risk of testicular cancer or kidney cancer
  • Decrease the response of antibodies to vaccinations in children and adults
