Odds are that you will be involved in an auto accident at some point in your life.  There were over 5.6 million car accidents in 2013 alone.  Accidents are a part of life, and sometimes there are out of your control.   There are certain things that should be done in order to protect your physical heath as well as your legal rights regarding the accident. Here is a brief reminder of the steps to take and not to take immediately after an auto accident:

Call 911 immediately- Even if your injuries and damage are minimal, you should always call the police in order to file an accident report.

Get the name, contact information, driver’s license number, and insurance information on the other drivers involved.

Do not admit fault- This is one of the most common mistakes made following an accident.

Make notes of other potential evidence including witness information, road conditions, traffic, and pictures of the vehicles and area.

Seek medical care, if needed.

Report your accident to your insurance company.

Do not talk to anyone’s else’s insurance company

Do not talk to an investigator

Do not post on social media (e.g., Facebook) regarding the accident
